I want to write something sappy about sunsets

The magical thing about sunsets is : when you are witnessing a beautiful sunset, it has this magnetic pull that attracts all bystanders. It demands the attention of the people, and the people obey. Not simply because it is beautiful, I have a theory: there is a deeper level to the phenomenon. I have once realised it before and just now re-realised on the coast of Marocco. (Sometimes you have an idea but it needs some more time to marinate in your subconscious before you can birth it, you know??).

The sun was setting and I was witnessing this event from a beach bench on the French coast. Everyone was captivated. And I felt this funny sense of unity, all of us little humans in awe of that big ol’ burnin’ ball in the sky. And it made me think of this one time (story in a story in a story, sorry) when I was thoroughly enjoying watching a jazz band play.

The deeper level is this: It is so fulfilling to watch someone do what they’re good at. To observe someone excelling at something and enjoying it is just lovely. It’s hypnotising, makes you forget your worries. A beautiful sunset is just that. The sun excelling at what it does best. We simply get to observe, and allow me to personify the sun a bit now and say, the sun must enjoy it too. To set so beautifully upon us little gawking humans.

I am hosting a drawing workshop at De Zolder in Rotterdam on the 5th of April. Let me know if you want to join.

Aaaaaand..... something to listen to: I recorded a set at Operator Radio this week, tried something new. See if you like it.

reminder to self #11 February '25 what to do when you have an evening to yourself practice juggling for five minutes (it’s still quite hard to do, so get annoyed at not being good at it and stop after three) put painters tape around the edges of the wall you want to paint so you can get started right away in the morning play the harmonica along to the music playing on your bluetooth speaker while blankly staring at the poster your sister gave you realise that you actually kind of understand...

reminder to self #10 December '24 What if being successful simply meant: to continue? ❊ click here to listen to an audiofile of reminder to self #10 I met a man who talked about how people say business and love don't go together, it's the opposite! he said, a business without love is nothing! From that moment I knew I liked him, who doesn't love a man who loves love? The other night I saw him again and we greeted each other and he asked how I was doing. Of course I said: good! as one does....

Nov '24 objects in the mind are smaller than they appear Why is it so damn hard to pick things back up once i've left them for a while? Falling out of a habit makes things so daunting. It feels as though I'm in a little boat slowly drifting away from a mountain, and as I drift the mountain grows and I drift and I drift and I'm paralysed simply by the thought of approaching this mountain. Things in my head always seem bigger than their true size. And perhaps, now in this moment, I am realising...
